Charlie Proctor Obituary

Charlie Mason Proctor III Loving father and dedicated nurse died Saturday, October 21, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 6:00 pm Monday, October 30, 2017 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will receive friends following the services at the funeral home.

Charlie graduated from Columbus High School in 1978 where he played football and participated in JROTC. After high school, he organized a Fire Explorer scout program and worked for the American Red Cross. He obtained an associates degree in Fire Science from CVCC, along with EMT and Paramedic licenses. While working as a Paramedic he obtained his degree in Nursing from Columbus College, then worked as a Certified Emergency Nurse for 28 years in the St. Francis Hospital ER from 1985-2013. Throughout the last 8 years of work, his focus was on patient care as a Case Manager for the Emergency Department. During his career, he also worked as a paramedic for First Care Ambulance, a Nurse Supervisor at Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital, and as an RN at many hospitals locally and across the country, including the emergency and trauma departments at Grady Memorial Hospital and Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

He had a God-given gift for emergency medicine with a true passion for teaching his craft. He maintained patient focus in the most dire and grim situations. Throughout his career, he was an instructor for Basic Life Support (LS), Advanced Cardiac LS, Pediatric Advanced LS, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course, Trauma Nursing Core Course, Advanced Trauma LS, Prehospital Trauma LS, Emergency Medical Technician & Paramedic courses along with vehicle and machinery extrication at the Georgia Extrication School. In his work, he was intuitive, compassionate, and dedicated. Over the years, he built a life-long work family that will miss him greatly.

Charlie was the most loving husband, father, brother, and uncle. He was always generous with his time, love, and praise for others. In a time of need, he was the first person you would call. He was an incredibly vivid storyteller. Everyone knew, that once he got started, you would surely learn a lot, and you better have time to sit and listen-he loved using word pictures to drive home a point. He had a mischievous spark and loved making others laugh. He had the biggest heart, and everyone who knew him was better for it.

Inspiring others to have fun in life, he loved when he could spend time on the water or be surrounded by family and friends out to eat at a restaurant or on a vacation to Walt Disney World. He could often be found behind the camera, capturing the magic of everyday life. His intelligence was unmistakable, and his love for reading only amplified a thirst for knowledge. Watching movies, especially old westerns, were a favorite pastime. In the last few years, he enjoyed the John Wayne quote, "Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway." Charlie lived a life full of courage and inspired others to do the same.

Although modest about his own accomplishments, he was extremely proud of his children and their accomplishments. He leaves behind a legacy of thoughtfulness and seeking out the good in others. He left this world and those who loved him far too early.

Survived by his wife, Teresa Sackie Proctor, son Bradley Austin Proctor, and daughters Sarah Marie Proctor and Kimberly Proctor Jeong (Peter). His sister Bonnie Proctor Thompson (Francis) and brother Michael Wylie Proctor (Sheri). Father and Mother in-law John and Flossie Sackie, brother in-law John Sackie, Jr. (deceased), Michael Sackie (Jackie), Timothy Sackie (Linda), and sister in-law Catherine Eckstein (Bill).
