The family has asked to please join them Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 4:30 -7 PM at The Loft 1032 Broadway Columbus, Ga. 31901 to celebrate Chris' life.
Chris was born on September 4th, 1973 in Greer, SC the son of Mike and Connie Luby of Columbus, Ga. and mother Debbie Barker of Spartanburg, SC. After relocating to Columbus, Georgia, Chris graduated from Hardaway High School in 1992 and Columbus State University in 1997. Chris joined Columbus Bank and Trust as a teller while in college, marking the beginning of a 24-year career with the company which most recently included a post in the Financial Wealth Management department as Senior Private Wealth Advisor. His work was not about managing numbers in a portfolio. He genuinely cared about his customers and he enjoyed the relationships that he built throughout his career.
Chris led his life in a way that delicately balanced traits and interests that are seldom found together in a single personality. Chris was highly respected for his honesty and loyalty. He was meticulous, studious, and prideful in his work as well as his wardrobe. His dedication to his customers was rivalled only by his carefully constructed sense of sartorial flair. Augmented by an army of ties, suits, and shoes, Luby was always looking fresh. When not working, he loved to cut loose and entertain the seemingly endless line of friends he had met through the years. Ask the hundreds who had broken bread with him through the years (at Luby's Good Times Bar and Emporium of late) and they would tell you Chris was probably their "best friend" and at minimum a great chef. Chris was a true friend, trustworthy, and good counsel; he listened intently and was patient with the demands of others, often putting their interests above his own. He was also known to occasionally throw an entire set of clubs into the water hazard while golfing with some of these same friends because he "just couldn't beat them". Chris had a deep appreciation of the arts and was a gifted artist himself, often giving his works to family and friends instead of promoting his own talents, and he had a nuanced ear and a wide appreciation for diversity in music. This sense of refinement would disappear every fall Saturday when he would put on his South Carolina Gamecock colors and proceeds to tell you incessantly how Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Will Muschamp was going to lead his beloved Gamecocks to the promised land. Chris was no armchair quarterback and he could often be found tending (or filling) goal for his Over-38 Columbus soccer team. Known as both Freight Train and The Fat Ninja to his teammates, Chris' appearance belied his cat-like reflexes; underestimated by the opposition, shots on goal had no chance when Chris was on patrol. Chris more than anyone appreciated the humor in all of this and loved to laugh-at life, at you, and at himself. That joy often sprang from the friends he kept and the life he led. The camaraderie with friends were truly special and significant moments for him in his life. He cherished these times. True joy, for Chris, meant family. Chris was committed to his family and joining his dad almost everyday after work was important to him. Family fishing and hunting trips with his dad, uncles and cousins was an event he looked forward to annually. He had a large family that consisted of his own as well as his in-laws, who were family to him long before he married the love of his life, Mary. He adored her, and you could see that anytime they were together. However, his children, "PRock", "Gracebird" and "Sambo" were his greatest joy. He lived for them and above all wanted them to know they were loved each and every day.
Other than his parents he is survived by his wife, Mary Patrick Luby of Columbus, Ga., children, Preston Luby of Auburn, Al., Gracie Luby of Columbus, Ga., Sam Luby of Columbus, Ga., brothers, Michael Luby of Greenville, SC., Jeremy Mullins (Martha) of Greenville, SC., Jason Ward (Shanna) of Columbus, Ga., mother and father in law, Laura and Jim Patrick of Columbus, brother in law, Carson Patrick (Millie) of Rosemary Beach, Fl., Martha Robbins (Jon) of Charleston, SC., Tippi Patrick of Atlanta, Ga. and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Columbus Youth Soccer League 3151 Woodruff Farm Columbus, Ga. 31907 or Columbus State University Art Department 4225 University Ave. Columbus, Ga. 31907.
