Elvira Esteva Recio, 87, of Ellerslie, GA died Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Columbus Hospice House.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 16, 2017 at Ambassadors of Christ Fellowship 4781 Milgen Rd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Pastor Luis Scott officiating according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Elvira Esteva Recio, was born on 25 December 1929 in Yauco, Puerto Rico to the late José Esteva and Aurelia Muñiz Velez. Elvira grew up in Barinas, Puerto Rico. She was married to Arquelio Recio on 15 October 1949 until his death on 13 August 2013. They were married for 64 years. While married to Arquelio they lived in Yauco and San Juan Puerto Rico, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Davis and Fort Gulick, Panama, Clarksville, Tennessee, Ozark, Alabama, Ellerslie and Columbus, Georgia. During their marriage she was a single parent on several occasions when Arquelio was deployed all over the world with the 101st Airborne Division and especially when he was deployed with the 101st Airborne Division during his two tours in Vietnam.
She ensured that her children did not lose their Puerto Rican culture including cooking, music and fluency in Spanish. Doña Recio was known for her rice and beans in the Clarksville Latino community that she brought to all her church gatherings. She and her husband required that her children go to and complete college.
She is survived by her children, two sons Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Retired (R) José Arquelio Recio (Deborah Koons-Recio), Dr. Leslie Recio (Suzanne Phillips) and Belinda Haken. She had three granddaughters, JoAnn Moore, Jennifer Gosse, Christina Haken and one great granddaughter Lainey Moore and one grandson Henry Haken and two great grandsons Landon Moore and Beckham Gosse.
