Gary Hudgins Obituary

Gary W. Hudgins 70 of Columbus, died Sunday, February 22, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at McMullen Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Hayes officiating. Interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Hudgins was born March 31, 1944 in Columbus, Georgia son of the late Roy and Mertis Carpenter Hudgins. During his high school days, he attended East Highland Elementary School, Columbus Junior High and Jordan High School. At the age of 5, he joined the Boys Club and in 1961 he was selected as Boy of the Year by the Columbus Boys Club.
Gary loved sports and was a baseball coach at Northern Little League for many years. He was a loyal Georgia Bulldog fan. Gary joined the U.S. Army in June of 1965 and served as a Military Police Officer during the Vietnam War. He was Honorably discharged from the Army on July 28, 1967.
Gary joined the Muscogee County Police Department in 1967 and later worked for the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office. His love for Law Enforcement continued and he went to work for the Columbus Correctional Institute in 1972. While a Correctional Officer, He advanced his education and attended Chattahoochee Valley Community College. He graduated in 1975 with a Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. He advanced up through the ranks and after 30 years of Service he retired as Deputy Warden of the Muscogee County Prison.
Gary was a member of Edgewood Assembly of God and the Fraternal Order of Police were he remained a member until his death.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years Sudine Hudgins; two daughters; Melody Price and Monica LaBranche (Joe), one brother Neil Shierling (Linda) and one sister Dianne Roberts all of Columbus, Ga. Six Grandchildren; Alan LaBranche, Jeremy LaBranche, Calandra Price, Garrett Price, Aria Price and Kassidie Viggins. One Great Grandson, Bentley LaBranche.
