Hugh Scruggs Obituary

Colonel (R) Hugh Frederick (Fred) Scruggs passed away November 29, 2016 in Columbus GA.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory in Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends following the services at the family home. Ashes will be scattered Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the U.S. Army Mountain Ranger Camp, Camp Frank D. Merrill, in Dahlonega, GA at 2:00 PM; all friends and family are welcome to attend.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Scruggs of Highsplint, KY. He graduated from Harlan High School in 1961 and the US Military Academy, West Point, New York in 1965 being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry. After attending Airborne and Ranger School, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division in Viet Nam. Subsequent assignments in the Infantry included Ranger School Instructor; and company commander, 1st Infantry Division in Viet Nam. He attended Special Forces School in 1973 and served in various Special Forces assignments to include Commander, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group in Panama; Commander, 7th Special Forces Group, Ft Bragg; and Commander of Special Operations Command South in Panama. Prior to retirement in 1995 he served as Commander, US Military Group, Caracas, Venezuela. Among his awards were Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (2), Bronze Star with "V" (4) and Purple Heart. Additionally, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal from Florida and Alabama.
After retirement he was employed as Executive Director, ManTech Telecommunications and Information Systems Corporation managing contracts in Latin America.
Fred is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandee, Columbus, GA; daughter, Major Jennifer Scruggs, US Army, Rockville, MD; and son Rick, his wife Nicole, a grandson, Hugh and granddaughter, Elly Homestead, FL; two brothers, Tom of Florence, SC and Richard of Harlan, KY. Also surviving are two nephews and three nieces and their families. Thanks to Roy Trumble for his daily encouragement and support to Fred during his illness.
