Larry Brightwell Obituary
Dr. Larry Eugene Brightwell, M.D. 77, of Columbus died Thursday April 09, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Saturday, April 11, 2015 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Dr. P. Shane Green officiating. The family will receive friends following the services in the Fellowship Hall according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Muscogee County Medical Society.
Dr. Brightwell was born November 18, 1937 in Preston, Georgia son of the late Roy and Lucile (Brooks) Brightwell, was a graduate of Webster County High School, 1955 Valedictorian of his graduating class, received his B.S., at Mercer University in 1959 and was a member of ATO at Mercer University. He later received his M.D. from Tulane University in 1962. Dr. Brightwell did his post Graduate training at Charity Hospital and his Fellowship in Surgery at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. He served as a Major in the U. S. Army Medical Corps with service at Ft. Benning and the 8th Field Hospital in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
Dr. Brightwell held a Medical License in both Louisiana and Georgia and was actively engaged in the private practice of medicine and surgery in the State of Georgia and was also certified by the American Board of Surgery. His professional organizations included; past President of the Muscogee County Medical Society, member of the House of Delegates and Legislative Council of the Medical Association of Georgia, Southern Medical Association, American Medical Association and the Georgia Surgical Society.
Dr. Brightwell's hospital affiliations include St. Francis Hospital, Doctor's Hospital and a member of the Courtesy Staff at Hughston Hospital. He was past Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Past Secretary of Medical Staff at the Medical Center and was past President of the Georgia Composite State Board of Medical Examiners.
Dr. Brightwell was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. His leisure activities included; golfing, fishing, hunting, travel and his other business interests included farming, horse racing and breeding.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Belle Knight Powell Brightwell of Columbus, GA; children; Thomas F. Ford, IV of West Hollywood, CA., Debra E. Brightwell of Stone Mountain, GA., David R. Brightwell of Columbus, GA., Melanie R. Brightwell and Jennifer B. Corbett (Stephen) both of Sharpsburg, GA. and one granddaughter Jillian H. Corbett of Sharpsburg, GA.
