Mavis Hamm Obituary

Mavis Foxworth Hamm, beloved wife, mother, mawmaw, sister, aunt and friend, died August 4, 2017, at the age of 81 at Orchard View Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Columbus, Georgia.

Services celebrating her life will be held on Sunday, August 6, at 1:30 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home in Columbus, Georgia, with Pastor Billy F. Duncan officiating. A private burial for family will be held at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Alabama, on Monday, August 7, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, James Robert Hamm. The family will receive friends following the services Sunday at the funeral home. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Michael Urquhart, Brooks Urquhart, Benny Parmer, Dennis Walsh, and Phil Martin.

Mrs. Hamm was born on July 30, 1936, in Opp, Alabama, and was the daughter of the late Marvin Ralph Foxworth and Gladys Hall Foxworth of Columbus, Georgia. Mrs. Hamm was a long-time Columbus resident and member of Beallwood Baptist Church. Determined and independent, Mrs. Hamm served professional careers in administrative services and as an entrepreneur, owning a successful restaurant for many years.

Other than her parents, Mrs. Hamm's brother, James Hugh Foxworth, preceded her in death.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Teddie Ussery and husband, Mike, of Columbus, GA; Angela Grissett and husband, Thomas, of Columbus; and Penny L. Elkins, and husband, Jason, of Dacula, GA; two granddaughters, Lindsay Tassoni and husband, Joe, of Columbus, and Jenna Belew and husband, Justin, of Columbus; one great grandson, Brooks Michael Urquhart of Columbus; one sister, Charlotte Ermolenko of Stanton, California; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend thanks to the staff that cared for their mother at Orchard View Nursing Center and most especially to D. Walker, caregiver and friend, who served their mom and dad faithfully with grace, compassion and love for many years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, Georgia, 31909, or Beallwood Baptist Church at 4519 Hamilton Road, Columbus, Georgia, 31904.
