Otera Hand Obituary

Otera McMillan Hand, 89, of Columbus, GA died peacefully on April 30, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2016 in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Reverend Ken Sirmans officiating. A private family interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mrs. Hand was born July 16, 1926 in Enigma, GA to the late Pearly and Lucille McMillan. She grew up on a farm where she always helped with the farm tasks and learned how to be a great southern cook and seamstress. She graduated from Enigma High School and went to work at Southern Bell. She then married the love of her life, the late Ret. SFC James Talmadge Hand. With the exception of a tour of duty in Germany, the family lived in Columbus, GA while SFC Hand served in the Army at Ft. Benning. Mrs. Hand continued working at Southern Bell in the repair department and retired after 26 years of service. She and Talmadge loved the Atlanta Braves. They enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and playing cards and dominoes with their family and friends. Her greatest joy was caring for her family especially for her grandchildren who affectionately called her "Granny."

Otera was a former member of Morningside Baptist church for many years and was a member of the "Keenagers" there. She also was a Pioneer at Southern Bell. She is remembered for her outgoing and caring nature. She was always ready to jump in and lend a hand.

Other than her parents and husband, Otera is preceded in death by siblings, Gordie McMillan and Lillian Henderson.

She is survived by her sons, Reed (Terri) Hand and Phil (Marie) Hand; grandchildren Emma (Derek), Randy (Becky), and Carson Hand; step-grandchildren Leah Knauff, and Jessica Cottles; great grandchildren, Camden, Eli, Grace, and Eva; siblings, Horace McMillan, Ruth Scarborough, Norman McMillan, Inman (Louise) McMillan and Ruby (Floyd) Gates; sisters-in-law, Ruth Pennington, and Jimmie Jones, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the professional care givers at the Personal Care Unit at Covenant Woods under the direction of Debbie Crowell and Columbus Hospice House for all their expert care and loving concern.
