Santos Velez Obituary
Santos Velez, 86, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Columbus Hospice House with his loving wife by his side.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. A private interment will be held at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery on Thursday. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Velez was born May 5, 1930 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico son of the late Severiano Velez and Juana Velez-Cuebas. He was retired from the U.S. Army after serving his country honorably for 24 years. During his distinguished military career, he was deployed to Korea and two terms in Vietnam. He was awarded the United Nations Service Medal, Korean service Medal w/ 3 Bronze Stars, Army Occupation Medal (Berlin), Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/ OLC, 6 Overseas Service Bars, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ 60 Device, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Award (6th Award), and Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar.
After retiring from the Military, he graduated from Columbus Technical Institute. He was employed by the Muscogee County School District and again retired after 18 years. During this time, he was an Owner of Party Stop Package Store on Double Churches Rd. in Columbus and was active with his family in Real Estate Investment.
He was Catholic by faith, and a member of St. Anne's Church. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a gentle and kind loving soul. The remainder of his life was spent between his lake home in Columbus, GA and his beach home in Panama City Beach, FL.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Waltraud Velez, two sons, Ronnie S. Velez (Angie) of Columbus, GA and Frank Velez of Columbus, GA, granddaughter, Alexis Velez of Columbus, GA, brother-in-law, Manfred Mogel (Margaret) of Berlin, Germany, nieces and nephews, Michael Mogel of Berlin, Germany, Carla and her son, Mick Mogel, Marina Holtz of Berlin, Germany and her children, Janick Holtz and Tari Holtz, and "Luckie", the beloved family dog of Columbus, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Columbus Hospice House 7020 Moon Rd. Columbus, GA 31909 www.columbushospice.com.
