Sydney McGrew Obituary

Sydney Jean McGrew, born Sydney Jean Boettcher, and also known as Sydney Boettcher Gutman, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, February 5, 2017. At the time, Sydney was doing one of her favorite things- watching the Super Bowl- when she suffered a suspected heart attack.

Sydney was born on January 4, 1957 in Stuttgart, Germany, to Army Captain Louis Henry Boettcher and Betty Jean McCleod (both deceased). Though she grew up a military brat, Sydney always considered Columbus, Georgia her home.

In 1975, Sydney graduated Hardaway High School, and went on to graduate from University of Georgia in 1979. After college, Sydney went to work on a remote farm in Kansas. Though she loved working with animals, Sydney was unsatisfied with the isolation of Kansas farm life, and she soon made her way back to Georgia.

Sydney met and married Albert Frederick Gutman Jr. in 1986. They were blessed in 1990, with the birth of their daughter, Jesse Adele Gutman. After a few years of computer programming. Sydney turned to teaching, and earned her Master's in Education from Columbus State University. Al and Sydney separated and divorced.

Sydney pursued other positions in Atlanta, and then in Tallahassee, before returning to Columbus in 2014 to be closer to her daughter. TSYS welcomed her home, and she returned to computer programming, moving from programmer to database administration last year.

A few months returning to Columbus, Sydney met Randy Ray McGrew and after spending two years working off his rough edges, Sydney married him on January 16, 2017. They were planning their honeymoon for the summer.

Sydney was always kind and full of love for those around her. She had a strong relationship with God and cherished animals of all kinds, but especially horses and dogs. While anyone who knows her, knows that she adored peanut butter, chocolate and ice-cream, it is also true that Sydney relished a very active lifestyle. Sydney loved both watching and playing sports. In her youth, she was always active in soccer, and more recently she was so actively involved in tennis that she was frequently playing in two leagues at once. Sydney loved life and she loved everyone in her life.

Sydney's parents and step-sister, Alice Skinner are deceased. Sydney is survived by her daughter Jesse Adele Gutman, her husband, Randy Ray McGrew, her three siblings; Jay Boettcher, Bruce Boettcher, and Leslie Taylor, her step-mother, Martha Boettcher, her step-sister, Lori Young, her three step-children, Megan, Ryan and Sarah McGrew and her beloved dogs, Chloe and Smartie.

A celebration of life service will be held for Sydney on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Lodge at Uchee Creek in Ft. Mitchell, AL. Those interested in attending can get details from her Facebook page, from TSYS, or by contacting her husband at [email protected].

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make a donation to one of the things Sydney loved: an animal charity, children in need, your local place of worship or, of course, the Georgia Bulldogs!
