William Bowick Obituary

Mr. William L. Bowick, Jr. passed away on July 30th, 2015. Mr. Bowick was born on October 9th, 1923 in Albany, GA, the son of the late William L. Bowick, Sr. and Blanchard Harris Cook Bowick.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 3, 2015 at St. Anne Catholic Church 2000 Kay Circle Columbus, GA 31907 with Father J. Gerard Schreck officiating. Interment will follow at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery at 1:30 PM. A Rosary led by Father Jacob Almeter will be said Sunday evening at 6:00 PM with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. Mr. Bowick's grandsons will act as pallbearers.

He was a veteran of World War II, receiving 5 battle stars in the European Theater of Operations, including the beach operations and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he attended the University of Georgia Henry W. Grady School of Journalism. He was head cheerleader in 1946 and 1947 and was also a member of Gridiron Society and Sigma Delta Chi Journalism Fraternity.

In February, 1955, after graduating from UGA, he moved to Columbus and began his career in radio and television. He hosted the number one morning show, Coffee With Bill, along with his sidekick, Philup Space. He served as Vice President of WRBL radio and was Program Director for WGBA, WVOC and WRBL. He received numerous awards for his broadcast productions, including the prestigious Silver Medal Award from the Advertising Club of Columbus and the "You Are Columbus, Georgia" award. He was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2008 for his outstanding contributions to the radio industry. He was involved in many area telethons and received a humanitarian award.

Mr. Bowick was an active charter member of St. Anne Catholic Church and is survived by his wife, Catherine "Cassie" Rakel Bowick, of 67 years and six children: Rebecca B. Stewart (Bob), Ellerslie, GA, Mary B. Rose, Lawrenceville, GA, William (Bill) L. Bowick, III, Christopher J. Bowick (Maureen), Bernadette B. Coker (Don), and Joy B. Wells (Greg), all of Columbus; 12 grandchildren: Robert J. Stewart, Lawrenceville, GA, Gregory M. Stewart (Carole), Lumpkin, GA; Zoe B. Levine (Ben), Brooklyn, NY, David W. Bowick (Mia), Los Angeles, CA, Zachary C. Coker (Cheryl), Midland, TX, Catherine M. Rose, Lawrenceville, GA, M. Taylor Rose, Austin, TX, William P. Wells, Athens, GA and J. Alexander Coker, Lindsay C. Anderson (Brian), Courtney S. Sheats (Rome) and Shelby C. Wells, all of Columbus; 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Anne - Pacelli Catholic School or St. Anne Outreach.
