Willie Matthew Obituary

Willie Yancey Matthew, 66, of Midland, GA went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 29, 2017.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 5, 2017 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church 6804 Forrest Rd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. James G. Davis officiating. Interment will be held at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Deacon Matthew was born January 18, 1951 son of LeAnna Matthew Barnes of Jonesville, LA and the late Willie Yancey Barnes and was the eldest of nine children. Our loving father was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Yolanda Matthew.

Deacon Matthew accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Personal Savior in 1989. He was a faithful member many years at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Columbus, GA.

He left his native home of Jonesville, LA in June 1971. He left Jonesville to join the Army, where he remained for the next 28 ½ years before he retired in 2000. He and his wife then returned to Columbus, GA making it their home.

Early in life, Deacon Matthew was joined in Holy Matrimony to Patricia Jackson in 1968. To this union, four children were born. He later married Emma A. Matthew in December 1985.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory a wife, Emma A. Matthew, his daughters, Jacqueline Marvin (Jermanze) of Box Springs, GA, Shamminkea Matthew of Kathleen, TX, one son, Cornelius Matthew of Columbus, GA, step-sons, Anthony J. McNeil and Robert S. McNeil both of Atlanta, GA, 5 grandchildren, siblings, Andrew Barnes (Julie) of Shreveport, LA, Joe Louis Barnes of Jonesville, LA, Ernest Barnes (Lisa), Stella Watson (Lionel) all of Shreveport, LA, Jimmy Barnes (Elizabeth) of Newport News, VA, Charles Barnes (Jennifer) of New Orleans, LA, Dornell Barnes of Shreveport, LA, Livette Randon (Robert) of Houston, TX, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends along with his church family.
