FEMA Offering Assistance for COVID-19 Related Funeral Expenses

Beginning in April 2021, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be providing financial assistance for funeral expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic up to $9,000. Those who are eligible will be able to receive their assistance as a check by mail or direct deposit. Funds are limited, so applications should be submitted as soon as possible to increase eligibility. As of April 12th, 2021 the FEMA hotline is open and application appointments are taking place.

Applicants must be able to supply a variety of official documents in order to receive aid, including but not limited to a death certificate and funeral expense documents such as receipts and contracts, as well as proof of funds received from other sources that were specifically used for funeral costs. Individuals who wish to receive assistance must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or qualified aliens. The death must have occurred in the United States after January 20, 2020 and must have been attributed to the COVID-19 virus as stated by the death certificate.

Know your options for funeral services:

Funeral services are considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will remain open to take care of your family and offer support.
Based on CDC guidelines we recommend that if you gather, it is with a small group. We will follow CDC guidelines as they change. Currently you can still have an intimate gathering that honors your loved one.
We have a web conferencing setup available, so your family and friends don’t have to miss out on honoring your loved one even with gathering limitations.
You may also stream the funeral from your phone, with the family’s permission.
You can have a large gathering for your loved one as soon as it is deemed safe. Inquire about planning a larger service for a later date.

Ways you can support your family and friends who have lost a loved one:

Write a condolence for the family on the funeral home website.
Join the live stream and light a candle at home, if the family has chosen this option.
More than ever, sign the guestbook online and share memories.
Mail a card or letter, sharing great memories with the family.
Give them a call, or FaceTime.

Know how to stay safe and healthy:

Hold off on handshakes and hugs, but show your condolences and care in other ways.
