Eddie Fleming

George Edgar "Eddie" Fleming, 80 of Columbus, Georgia was born to Eternal Life on Monday, June 4, 2018 at the Columbus Hospice House. Eddie was born November 16, 1937 in Monmouth, Illinois to the late George Washington Fleming and Mildred Clark Fleming. Upon the death of his mother at age 5, Eddie was raised by his maternal grandmother Myrtle Mae Clark in Kahoka, Missouri. Eddie graduated from Kahoka High School class of 1955. Eddie enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1955-1959. He married his sweetheart Myrna Sue Reed of Vienna, GA in 1958. The young couple moved to Georgia and resided in Perry from 1966-2005 at which time they relocated to Columbus to be closer to family. Eddie was a route salesman in Perry for the Flowers Baking Company for 38 years and retired in 2000. He was appreciated by his customers for his outgoing friendly personality. Eddie worked for Walker Rhodes Tractor Company in Perry from 2000-2005. Upon his move to Columbus, he worked for Standing Boy Farms from 2005-2017. Eddie fully retired at age 79. He truly exemplified service before self. Eddie was a tireless worker, never seeking attention for his actions. He was a church planter in Perry helping establish both Crossroads Methodist Church and Rehoboth Baptist Church and was involved in numerous church related ministries. Additionally, Eddie was a founding member and the first Fire Chief of the Meadowdale Volunteer Fire Department, Houston County. On most Friday nights you would find Eddie holding the chains at the Perry High School football games. Eddie leaves his legacy to his sons, Kent Fleming and his wife Donna, and Keith Fleming and his wife Sherry; five grandchildren, Capt Reed Fleming and his wife Capt Jennifer Fleming, Kristen Fleming, Madison Fleming, Mallory Fleming, and Kinsley Fleming; sister Mary Lee Bealer of Aiea, HI; and niece Kaethe Bealer of San Francisco, CA. Eddie was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Sue Reed Fleming. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 11:00AM in the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home with Reverend David Helms officiating. Family will visit with friends Thursday evening from 5:00PM until 7:00PM. A graveside service will be held Friday at 3:00PM in Perry Memorial Gardens, Perry, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Bethesda Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 157 Ellerslie,GA 31807.
