Eva Cheney Obituary

Eva V. Cheney, 84, died on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM EST at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Eva was born on August 24, 1933 in Debrecen, Hungary daughter of the late Ferenc Varga and Anna Petrus. Eva lived an adventurous life. She worked as Secretary to Pál Maléter, head of the Hungarian Ministry of Defense. Her first husband, Michael R. A. Erdey, was founding Electrical Engineering Professor of Tuskegee University, who also participated as one of the students in the Hungarian Revolution. They fled to England, and soon after, they and their young daughter received asylum in the US in 1960 and became citizens a few years later. The family traveled extensively in the US, during Summer jobs and vacations. Michael died of heart disease.

Her second husband was Walter K. Cheney, resident of Auburn, Alabama, a Korean War Veteran and talented artist, who worked for Auburn University's Extension Service. Walter died of Cancer.

Eva was a resident of Auburn, Alabama since 1970. She was a talented Artist and beloved Homemaker, who also worked as a Cosmetologist, and as a Substitute Schoolteacher, she influenced many lives towards a productive path. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Auburn, Alabama.

Her hobbies included gardening, rock hounding, and ham radio. She enjoyed an active life. For many years, she was a member of the Auburn Citizens Public Safety Academy, East Alabama Gem & Mineral Club in Opelika, Ham Radio Club in Opelika, and the Montgomery Kennel Club in Alabama, and she was training with a local search and rescue team before her health declined.

She is survived by 3 children, Violet Erdey, Raymond Erdey and his wife Becky Erdey, and Robert Erdey and his wife Manjit Erdey, oldest to youngest. Grandchildren: Michael Erdey, Elizabeth Erdey, James Erdey, and Joshua Erdey. She has an elder sister and a niece, and several great nephews and nieces, still living in Hungary.
Honorable mention: Eva had a close relationship with Charles (Bud) Nesmith and often referred to him as her adopted son.
