Gerda Tarkington-Smith Obituary

Gerda Ladwig Tarkington-Smith, 90, of Columbus, GA died Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at St. Francis Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbus 8827 Heiferhorn Way Columbus, GA 31904 with Mr. Ed Wilson officiating according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mrs. Tarkington-Smith was born August 17, 1928 in Berlin, Germany daughter of Fanz Andreas Ladwig and Else Charlotte Nesetril. She was the widow of Dr. Theodore Golden Smith and had lived in Columbus since 1968. She was a teacher at Dawson Elementary and Wesley Heights Elementary School for a total of 22 years. She also wrote a book entitled "Ursala's Legacy-1 War Bride's Story".

She was a magna cum laude graduate of Columbus College (now Columbus State University) and earned her master's degree in Education from the same institution. She was a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the Georgia PTA, the Columbus College Alumni Association, the Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She was a member of the Humane Society of the United States, the National Humane Education Society, and the Doris Day Animal League. She was also a founding member of the Honorary Fellows of the John F. Kennedy Library.

Locally, Mrs. Tarkington-Smith was a charter member and past president of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbus, a charter member and past president of the Muscogee County Humane Society (formerly Chattahoochee Valley Humane Society), and a charter member and past president of the Columbus Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL). She was a member of the Columbus Symphony Women's Association as well as a supporter of the Bradley Museum of Arts and Sciences and the Columbus College Faculty Concert Association.

She is survived by 3 sons, Michael T. Tarkington of Columbus, GA, Dieter K. Meins of Dawson, TX and Robert L. Meins of Mobile, AL, daughter, Patricia Tarkington of Portland, OR, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
