Julie was born September 17, 1959 in Spartanburg, SC daughter of Jane Powell Crowder of Greenville, SC and the late Benjamin Hood Crowder Jr. She graduated in 1981 from Presbyterian College with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Development. Julie worked as a preschool teacher at St. Thomas Day School.
Julie served several non-profit organizations, including the Junior League of Columbus where she loved participating in The Follies as a dancer, the St. Francis Auxiliary, and Girls Inc. She was also a strong supporter of the Shaw High School athletic program, where she served as community coach of the swim team.
Julie had a love for children and teaching. She spent over 40 years as a private swim coach. She taught babies, toddlers and children of all ages to swim. She made sure each student learned the water safety skills needed to become a confident swimmer. She touched many lives during those years which gave her much joy.
Julie loved spending time with her friends and family, but she mostly enjoyed supporting her two children in their endeavors; she particularly enjoyed following Rad's baseball, volleyball and swim teams which led him to be a coach, and Mary Jane's love of dance which led her to Broadway. Julie was a sustaining force for her family and the unconditional love she had for them will stay with them forever.
Survivors other than her mother include her husband of 36 years, Frederick "Fred" Robinson Mitchell, Sr. of Columbus, GA, son, Rad Mitchell of Columbus, GA, daughter, Mary Jane Mitchell, of Columbus, (fiancé, Brady Bowden of Phenix City, AL.) sister, Laura Crowder Peace (Johnny) of Greenville, SC, brother Benjamin Hood Crowder III of Marietta, GA. ,father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick William Mitchell, Jr. of Columbus, GA, brother-in-law, William Scott Mitchell of Smiths, AL, sister-in-law, Susan Mitchell Cross of Atlanta, GA, special friend whom she considered a sister, Laura Wickham of Columbus, GA, her faithful companion, her labradoodle, Tanner, and many nephews and one niece.
The family would like to thank Dr. Suresh Nukala MD with the John B Amos Cancer Center, and all the caregivers from the St. Francis Women's Health Clinic, Mrs. Jill Schwartz Gomez and Dr. Sausan Abouharb MD. with the Oncology Department at MD Anderson.
