Marli Land Obituary

Marli Land, 84, of Warm Springs Rd. in Columbus, slipped away peacefully late Sunday night, September 3rd. Her life was filled with many expressions of love; for her family and friends, her church and nature's company, her two homelands once at war, and always for the chord that rang through all her days, her love of music.

Marli was born Maria Helena Appel in Euskirchen, Germany to Michael Appel and Maria Zander. As a little girl she lived through her house being bombed twice by the Allied Air Forces in WWII.

Trained in music, she left her fractured country at age 19 and adventured to America arriving in Miami, Fla. While working as a store clerk she met Arthur Julian Land, a budding education scholar recently discharged from the U.S. Air Force.

Wedding bells soon rang for the couple, followed over the next several years by two sons and four moves across the southeast, the family settling in Columbus in 1970. Marli joined St. Anne's Catholic Church and began a long and happy career as a member of the choir. Her singing talent also secured her a place in the Columbus State University Civic Chorale and she performed with them on tours across Europe. Marli also made many new friends while working as a sales associate at Mansour's and the Medical Center gift shop.

In her last year she suffered in the confining grip of a host of infirmities. With the kindness of hospice care at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, Marli was still always humming. Asked what tune she carried, she would often reply "Just something I'm making up." Even her low cough seemed to come in waltz time. Near the end, when she was often unable to speak, Marli and her son hummed Beethoven's Fifth to each other. In her last hours she listened to Vivaldi, then her breathing slowed, and holding hands with her family she passed over in accompaniment to Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, the languidly beautiful "Allegretto."

Marli was preceded in death by her parents and older sister, Loni Hermes, in Germany. She is survived by her ex-husband Arthur of Fortson, her sons Arthur of Seattle, Wash., and Mark of Cartersville.
