Mary Brown-Michelson Obituary

Mary N. Brown-Michelson stepped into the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, Son of the Only Living God, on October 6, 2017. Those who knew her know that this was what she lived for...that fervent desire that others know Him as she did. For sake of fact, she was born on February 12, 1911 in Bulloch County, Georgia to Hampton J. and Martha Bowen Newman. Mary grew up with a musical, comical bunch of brothers and sisters, playing violins and laughing and singing. Singing would become a staple of Mary's household; she is famous in the family for her constant humming and improvised songs. She had a quirky sense of humor, which kept her family on their toes and in stitches.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Mike McBride officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home.

Mary suffered several tragic losses in her 106 years, including her mother who died when Mary was only 18 months old. She was raised by her mother's brother Leaston Bowen and his wife, Edna Clyde. She married Eugene Stephens and gave birth to two children, son, Stanley and daughter, Marlene. Mary worked for many years in Savannah to support her young children back in Pembroke; Marlene very fondly remembers how excited they were for Mary to come home on the weekends and bring toys, books and treats.

After some difficult years, Mary met and married her second husband, Woodrow W. Brown, an Army officer who flew in WWII and the Korean Conflict. With Woody, she and her family could be reunited, and moved to Miami, Florida. During this time, they lost Mary's son, Stanley. Woody and Mary had a long life together, traveling the world with the Army. They had two daughters, Jennifer Kay and Beth Diane, who moved to Oklahoma, Germany and finally wound up in Columbus, Georgia, where Woody retired from the Army. He became a minister and, as part of their mission, started St. John's Methodist Church on Moon Road until he retired. Woody died in 1987, and Mary continued to live in Columbus until her death, tirelessly cared for by daughter, Jennifer. Mary's daughter Beth passed away in 2014. Mary was a member of Trinity Temple in Columbus, lovingly enfolded by numerous long-term friends and a pastor second to none, Michael McBride, who will conduct her service

Her daughters and grandchildren will remember Mary for her humor, her great cooking and her White Shoulders perfume. She was a strong, courageous, and feisty woman. And tenacious; she held on until the very last moment. We like to think she loved her family so much, she could not quite bring herself to let go. And though Mary could be contentious in her later years, and her humor turned a bit acerbic, her family loved her dearly and will miss her, but is much relieved that her suffering of the last few months is now over, and that she is in peace, surrounded in Heaven by her loved ones and in God's Hands.

Mary is survived by daughters Marlene Brugger, née Stephens, and Jennifer Butcher, née Brown, grandchildren Stephanie, Jeff, Seth, Betsy, James, Robert, and Angela, and 15 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
