Monte Simonton Obituary

Monte Masters Simonton, Sr., 70, of Cataula, GA died Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Midtown Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Pastor Mark Burnett officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Simonton was born August 8, 1947 in Ft. Benning, GA son of the late Major General Simonton and Ruth Sanders Simonton. He joined the Army at the age of 18 on active duty. He later changed to the National Guard and the Active Reserve. After 25 years of service, he retired as a Major. During this same time he started his career in the Columbus Fire Department and then moved to the Ft. Benning Fire Department where he retired as a District Chief. Always a man of strength and honor, he worked additional jobs to support his family. With degrees in fire science and criminal justice, Monte was the fire science instructor at CVCC and an instructor at the Crane Institute of America. He was extremely proud of his special abilities to own and operate Circle S Ranch, his farm with horses, cows, goats, and even a llama! He loved animals and seemed to be able to calm the wildest of beast. Monte was devoted to helping people and animals and rescued many animals and people both literally and figuratively. Monte believed in the Lord and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church.

Other than his parents, Monte was predeceased by his brother, Major General Simonton, Jr., sister Zee Jones, and nephew Trae Simonton.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Simonton, sons, Monte Masters Simonton, Jr. (partner, Nathan) and Joshua Craig Simonton (Ashley), daughters, Nikki Railey (Ernie), Sonya Strickland (Stan), Tammy Austin (Bob), Christi Jackson, and Dena Simonton (Andy), step-sons, Robert Perry, Sr. and Cody Perry, and adoptive grandson, Robert Perry, Jr.
Grandchildren are Tripp, Daniel, Chrystal, Blake, Summer, Trenton, Austin, Dawson, Lilly, Sophie, Drew, Hannah, Troy, and many cousins and family members.

Donations in memory of Monte may be made to Begin Again Farms (a rescue non-profit for horses) through GA Gives at www.gagives.org or any organization for the rescue and treatment of animals.
