Richard Toelle Obituary
Richard Lee Toelle, 78, of Columbus, GA, passed away after a short illness on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 pm EST, on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. A Memorial Service will be held at Wynnton United Methodist Church with Dr. Rick Mitchell and Reverend Jay Grantham officiating on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 10:00 am EST. A private interment will follow.
Mr. Toelle was born November 16, 1939 in Portland, Oregon, the son of the late Edward Forrest and Velma Lee Toelle. He joined the Army in 1958 when he was 17 years old and was an engineer in Alaska. He later joined the Army reserves. After his time in the military he worked for the Columbus District of Georgia Power. He began as a helper and progressed to apprentice lineman, lineman, lead lineman, line foreman, and quality control management, finishing his 34 year career as the foreman in charge of all lineman training.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Mr. Toelle enjoyed cooking, traveling and was an avid outdoorsman. He loved all types of fishing especially salmon fishing in Alaska and Oregon, fly fishing in North Georgia and sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River. His passion was hunting and he went on many special hunting excursions such as dove in Argentina, moose in Canada, elk in Idaho, antelope in Wyoming, ducks in Mississippi, and pheasant in Kansas. After retiring he traveled extensively with his wife and family.
Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria, who he married on October 23 in 1960. He is also survived by his three sons Richard Lee Toelle Jr. (Amelia), James Forrest Toelle (Virginia) and Andrew Ernest Toelle (Stephanie); seven grandchildren, Ryan Toelle (Amanda), Matthew Toelle, Benjamin Toelle(Alix), Christopher Toelle(Elizabeth), David Toelle, Andrew Toelle (Lindsay) of Enid, OK, and Courtney Toelle of Orlando, FL; five great grandchildren, Austin William Toelle, Evan Kristopher Toelle, Sandra Alahnna Fenner, Emma Lee Toelle, and Amelia Claire Toelle as well as his sister, Darlene Rae Johnson (Frank) of Vale, OR.
