Roger Riedel Obituary
Roger Dale Riedel, 65, of Columbus, GA died Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Piedmont Midtown Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Pastor Seth Hon officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. The family would like people to wear their football college colors (even if it isn't Alabama or SEC) because Roger loved the game of football.
Roger Riedel was born August 31, 1953 in Newport News, VA, son of the late Henry Riedel and Lucille Williams Riedel. He retired after 30 years at TSYS working in the IT Department. He loved building vintage slot cars, martial arts, crossword puzzles, the beach, music, our country, University of Alabama, Atlanta Falcons, his family and his friends.
Roger loved to give nicknames to his friends and loved ones. He was very quick witted and was known to have no "filter". He was known to put people in situations, "training situations", to help them grow whether it was professionally or personally. He could often be heard saying "it is spelled J-O-B not F-U-N"! If he liked you, you could expect him to pick on you. He often referenced himself as Dear Abby and many would seek his sound advice. He loved animals, especially his beloved dogs. Roger had the best memory. He did all three of the Ledger Enquirer crossword puzzles on the porch every morning with a pen finishing all of them in less than 30 minutes. He was an artist who could sketch and paint very well. He was also musically talented and played the drums for a local band called Bethany in the 70s. Roger was signed to play football for the Atlanta Falcons. He also had a full-ride football scholarship with the University of Alabama, but he fulfilled his duty by joining the U.S. Navy to serve his country in Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Janice Marcano Riedel of Columbus, GA, son, Christian Riedel (Michelle) of Cataula, GA, sister, Linda Wyatt of Bibb City, grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jadon and Elijah, cousins, Gene Allmond (Joan) of Ellerslie, GA, extended family and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the building fund at Grace Baptist Church, Columbus, GA or Chris Kyle FROG Foundation (Navy Seal).
