Sanford Reid Obituary

Sanford Freeman Reid, 85, died Thursday, February 2, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, February 6, 2017 at Christ Community Church 4078 Milgen Rd. Columbus, GA 31907 with Rev. Dr. Keith Cowart officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Mr. Reid was born June 5, 1931 in Columbus, GA son of the late Elijah Clark Reid and Margaret Stilwell Reid. He graduated from Georgia Teachers College in 1952 with a BS in Education, and then graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1955 with a Master of Education. Mr. Reid attended Columbia University in 1961 receiving a Professional Diploma in Guidance and Counseling. He then graduated from Auburn University in 1976 with a Doctorate in Education.
He married Doris Mallone Bentley on June 7, 1951. Mr. Reid served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1953. He started teaching in Muscogee County School District at Jordan Vocational High School in 1954 and retired 30 years later as Director of Research and Evaluation. Dr. Reid was ordained as an elder of the Free Methodist Church in 2011.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Doris Bentley Reid of Columbus, GA, children, Marc Allen Reid (Doris) of Columbus, GA, Terri Reid Howze (Robert) of Dawsonville, GA and Brad Bentley Reid (Leah) of Athens, AL, two brothers, Charles D. Reid of Columbus, GA and John W. Reid (Patsy) of Texas, grandchildren, Rebekah Reid, Rachel Reid, Jody Price, Matthew Herring, Brian Reid, Riley Whitson, Aaron Reid and Julie Reid and great grandchildren, James Reid Herring, Lily Grace Herring, Mae Collie Herring, and Sanford Clay Reid.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Christ Community Church.
