Wayne L. Henly,95, of Columbus died at his home November 30, 2018 at Spring Harbor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Marge. He is also survived by his children Jayne Anthony and Janice Horwitz (Raymond); grandchildren Julie McPhee (Eric), Brian Horwitz (Corina) and Jennifer Antony; great grandchildren Brandon McPhee, Meghan McPhee, Sadie Horwitz and Lucy Horwitz.
Wayne was born on July 9, 1923 in Jacksonville, Illinois. He was a member of the ELKS Club in Jacksonville. At the onset of World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Force. Following completion of his training, he was assigned to that 827th Bombardment squadron. During the war he flew 51 aerial combat missions in the B24 bombers over Europe, being honorably discharged in 1944.
Upon returning home to Illinois, he went back to school and graduated from Illinois College. He began working for the US Postal Service in 1957 and was promoted to the position of Postal Inspector in the New York City branch. He moved his family to Carteret, New Jersey where he lived until moving to Columbus in 1979.
During his 39 years in Columbus, Wayne was very involved in the community. He and his wife were members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He was the Past President of the Columbus Lions Club and he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Lions Club award. He began volunteering at St. Francis Hospital in 1990, and in 2010 was honored for contributing over 12,000 volunteer hours.
His greatest love and devotion were to his family. They filled his heart with joy, and their pictures filled every space in his home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, December 5, 2018 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church officiated by Rev. Grace Burton-Edwards. A private family interment will be held at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. A celebration of Life reception will be held at Spring Harbor at Green Island starting at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
