Alexander Vernor Payne, 88, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, July 31, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Morningside Baptist Church 6065 Morningside Dr. Columbus, GA 31909 with Rev. Thad Smith officiating. Interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 to 3:00 PM at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Payne was born April 13, 1928 in Toccoa, GA son of the late Allen E. and Lorena Childs Payne. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in World War II and later worked and retired after 30+ years in Sales at Martha White Foods. Mr. Payne was an active deacon and member of Morningside Baptist Church since moving to Columbus in 1966.
He was a loyal and loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed telling jokes, fishing, wood-working, life and mostly spending time with his family.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Payne Henley and brothers, Thurman Payne and Maurice Payne.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jean Addison Payne of Columbus, GA, children, William David Payne (Pam) of Elberta, GA and Karen Payne Ponder (Ernest) of Donalsonville, GA, grandchildren, William David Payne, II (Elise) of Albertville, AL, Jennifer Payne Snell (Scott) of Twin Falls, ID, Britton Henley of Columbus, GA, Bailey Ponder, Addison Ponder and Davis Ponder all of Donalsonville, GA, great grandchildren, Mason Payne, Raelyn Payne, Ian Snell and Mackenzie Snell, two brothers, James Henry Payne and Homer Payne, and sister, Buena Segars.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association 5156 River Rd. Suite M Columbus, GA 31904 and/or Gentiva Hospice 100 Brookstone Centre Parkway Columbus, GA 31907.
