James Allen Watson, known to many simply as Allen, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, at Piedmont Columbus Regional–Midtown. Born on May 26, 1945, in Richland, Georgia, Allen’s journey was marked by dedication, warmth, and the unmistakable charm of a man who truly never met a stranger.
Allen was a proud graduate of Jordan High School, attaining his diploma in 1963. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country with honor in the United States Navy, exemplifying the integrity and patriotism that would remain hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
For 32 years, Allen devoted himself to a distinguished career at Delta, after which he carried his work ethic and dependability into more community-centric roles. He worked as a Bus Driver for the Muscogee County School System, ensuring the safety of countless children, and brought his sporting enthusiasm to his position as the Official Scorekeeper for the former Columbus Cottonmouths ice hockey team. Allen’s professional endeavors were a reflection of both his reliability and his joyful engagement with others.
He was renowned among friends and family for his love of NASCAR, fervent support of the Braves and Falcons, and for pursuing passions as diverse as hog hunting and beekeeping. Always friendly, Allen had the innate ability to bring people together, his personality described as classy, dignified, and always ready with a joke. His infectious friendliness endeared him to many and fostered connections that spanned generations.
Family was at the very heart of Allen’s life, and he considered being a father his proudest accomplishment. As a husband, brother, uncle, and cousin, his love and laughter enriched the lives of those closest to him. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara Watson; his sisters, Linda Whatley and Carol Weekley; nieces Casey Whatley and Deena Whatley; and cousins Janet Abell Sanders, Cindy Abell Smith, and Suzanne Abell Jones. Allen’s life was also shaped by the memory of those who preceded him in death: his father, James Watson; his mother, Vida Lee Hollomon Watson; and his beloved daughter, Tiffany Dawn Watson.
Family and friends are invited to honor Allen’s life at a viewing on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., where fond memories and loving tributes will be shared by all those whose lives he touched. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery, where all are welcomed. Pastor Don Wilhite and Pastor David Dollar will officiate.
Allen’s legacy endures in the lessons he imparted, the laughter he inspired, and the connections he nurtured across his many roles in life. He will be deeply missed and remembered with great affection and respect.
