Chief Warrant Officer 4 (RET) Fred Jordan Catchings passed away on June 29, 2026, in Hoschton, Georgia, at the age of 71. Born on August 6, 1954, in Camilla, Georgia, Fred’s journey was marked by steadfast service, commitment to excellence, and deep devotion to his family and community.

A proud graduate of Mitchell County High School in 1971, Fred continued his studies at Ft. Valley State University, graduating in 1974. It was at Ft. Valley State that he became a life member of Phi Beta Sigma in 1973—a fraternity and brotherhood whose values and fellowship remained with him throughout his life. Fred’s pursuit of education continued with a master’s degree from Florida State University, equipping him with the skills and knowledge that would inform his remarkable career.

In 1987, Fred answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army, launching a distinguished military career that spanned more than two decades. Rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, his journey began with his first posting at Ft. Hood, Texas, followed by an assignment at USAG Wiesbaden, Germany, and culminating at Ft. Benning, Georgia, where he ultimately retired. After attending warrant officer school, Fred became Bandmaster of the US Army Band, a role through which he combined his passion for music with his dedication to service, uplifting morale, and fostering unity among his fellow soldiers.

Fred’s love for music transcended his military career. From 2011 to 2023, he was the esteemed conductor of the Bob Barr Community Band, earning the admiration of peers and community members alike. Under his leadership, the band flourished and became a cherished institution, nurturing local talent and enriching the cultural fabric of the community.

Fred’s legacy endures in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sherrell Bradley Catchings, his loving daughters, Nichole Leverette and Ashley Catchings, and his son, Lihu Graham. His legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren, Jordan Isaiah Leverette and Lizzie Rose Graham, whose lives he touched with wisdom and warmth.

He also leaves behind his brother, Dr. Timothy Catchings, and numerous sisters-in-law: Renia, Queen Catchings, Bertha Hines, Gwendolyn Toombs, JoAnn Graham, Krystal Keaton, and Lisa. Brothers-in-law include Terry, HB, ALvin Wimberly, and the late David L Cammon. Fred is fondly remembered by his nephews, Willy Hines, Wilburt Hines, Anthony Hines, and Byron Gilbert, and nieces Regina Willingham, Wendy Gilbert, Tamika Graham, Carmne Graham, and Janise Mason.

Fred was predeceased by his beloved brother, Cecil T. Catchings; his mother, Delora Jordan Catchings; his father, Cecil T Catchings I; his sister-in-law, Stephanie Mason; and his brother-in-law, David L Cammon.

Fred’s life was a testament to honor, dedication, and service, defined by the love he shared with his family and the many lives he touched through music and military service. His influence will live on in the community, the military bandmembers he mentored, and the family who carries forward his example of strength and grace.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA 31907.
