CW4 (Ret. Army) William Rex Thomas, 92, of Columbus, GA passed away peacefully in his home Monday, June 24, 2019.
We will celebrate a life well lived Thursday, June 27, 2019 at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory at 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Military services with Elizabeth McGraw officiating and Masonic funeral services will be held in the McMullen Chapel at 2:00 PM. A reception will immediately follow the services. A private interment in the Masonic Mausoleum will be held at Parkhill Cemetery.
Rex was born in Andalusia, AL on 10 July 1926, the son of the late William Kay Thomas and Sybil Chapman Thomas. In addition to a short tour in the Navy during WWII, he retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years as a Food Service Warrant Officer. His service included several tours of Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the military, he managed the historic Goetchius House on Broadway in Columbus, GA.
Rex was a Mason for over 65 years. He spoke often of his friends in the brotherhood and he took great pride in being a member of the Ft. Benning Masonic Lodge #579. He was also a member of the Muscogee Power Squadron, teaching boating safety for many years.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Roy Thomas, and nephew, Don Thomas.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Clevenger Thomas of Columbus, GA; daughter, Janet Oppedisano, son-in-law Michael Oppedisano and granddaugher, Adele Simons of Clinton, NY; niece, Diane Jacobs; and stepdaughter, Andrea Tafoya.
Rex spent his entire life making sure people around him were well taken care of and well-fed. His loving words to people close to him were always "Enjoy Life, & Eat Good!"
