David W. Karabelski, affectionately known as "Ski," passed away on April 29, 2026, in Columbus, Georgia. Born on November 25, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, David led a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and service.
A proud and dedicated Christian, David was a good husband and a loyal friend to many. He held his family close to his heart and treated everyone around him with great respect, cherishing many as close companions.
David served his country with honor and distinction in the United States Army for 20 years. Rising to the rank of Master Sergeant (MSG), he was especially proud to have been a Ranger and First Sergeant (1SG). Throughout his military career, David earned numerous awards including the Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation Badge with Palm, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, and the prestigious Ranger Tab. His courage, dedication, and leadership exemplified the highest ideals of military service.
Beyond his military accomplishments, David enjoyed bicycle riding and often undertook rides as long as 40 miles. In his younger years, he loved the women and drink a little too much, but close friends at Bethany Church and the Dream Center helped to guide him to a better life. Those who knew him well will agree he was quite the character.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Cassell, his devoted son David T. Karabelski, his brothers Lawrence W. Karabelski, Paul W. Karabelski, and John W. Karabelski, his sister Cynthia A. Crouch, and his extended family including Kathleen Brenneman, Paul Crouch, Marcia Blum, Sherrie Hall, Margaret C. Barch, and Travis Smith, his grandchildren Casey, Tyler, Jasmine, Faith, Bella, and Gabe, many nieces and nephews, and his very best friends Marcus, Amber, Meghan, Jacob, and Cam Mitchum. Many thanks to so many, like Neil Schaff, who spent so much time and love checking on his comfort, and mine. May God bless you all.
He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Jenny K. Smith, father, Walter F. Karabelski; his mother, Ann M. Kristofik; and his brother, Thomas W. Karabelski.
His Military Honor Service will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of David to Tunnell to Towers or PAWS Humane on Milgen Rd.
