Edwin Mitchell "Mitch" Howell, a man whose life was a testament to resilience, love, and unwavering spirit, peacefully passed away on March 28, 2026, at the Hospice House in Columbus, Georgia. Born on October 20, 1959, Mitch touched countless lives during his 66 years with his gentle wisdom, warm smile, and heartfelt advice, encouraging everyone he met to truly savor every moment life offers.
Mitch’s professional journey reflected his dedication and adaptability. He was a valued Customer Service Advocate at Aflac for 18 years, where his kindness and patience were as much a part of his work as his expertise. Before that, Mitch engaged deeply with the electrical business, serving in roles from counter person to inside and outside salesman, always bringing his earnest work ethic to every position he held.
His education at Columbus College laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and growth. Yet, it was his personality that truly defined him. Known far and wide for his ability to speak less but say so much, his expressions alone often communicated volumes. Through health challenges and life’s adversities, Mitch never lost his radiant smile. His advice was simple yet profound: enjoy life fully and never take a single moment for granted.
Mitch shared nearly 31 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife Janet Howell. Their bond was that of soulmates, a partnership built on deep love and mutual support. He was a proud father to his sons, Joey Howell and Michael Murray Jr.m also step-son Brandon Janus. Mitch's family was further enriched by the joy and laughter of his grandchildren Kalaesia Janus, Liam Mask, Emii-Grayce Murray, and Lachlann Murray. His mother, Joyce Howell, and mother-in-law, Joan Cormier, along with sister-in-law Stacey Howell, aunt Judy Clark May, and cousin Melinda May, remain as loving guardians of his memory, holding dearly onto the moments they shared.
Among Mitch’s proudest moments was when he earned his pewter mug at Old Chicago, engraved with his name—a token presented amid a joyous gathering of friends and family celebrating his spirited achievement. To everyone there he was known as "Papa Bear". Outside of his career and family, Mitch’s passions shone brightly. Golf was more than a hobby; it was a lifelong love. Whether swinging on the greens or engrossed in televised matches, golf brought him immense joy. His loyalty to the Alabama Crimson Tide reflected his zeal for life, and his fondness for rock ballads provided a soundtrack to his days. Notably, Mitch was affectionately known as a "Grill Master," always eager to experiment with new recipes and share the delightful results with those around him.
Mitch’s passing marks the end of a remarkable journey, but his legacy lives on in every life he touched. He was preceded in death by his father Edwin Edison Lee Howell, brother Todd Howell, father-in-law Raymond Cormier, and several aunts and uncles. Their memories remain entwined with his, a thread woven into the tapestry of his enduring story.
As we remember Edwin Mitchell "Mitch" Howell, we celebrate a man who embodied strength, kindness, and joy. His life reminds us all to cherish our loved ones, greet each day with a smile, and live fully—just as he did. Though he has left this earthly realm, the warmth of his spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who had the honor to know and love him.
Mitch, "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and continue your love for golf on the greens in Heaven.
