It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Emily Sturdivant Marchant, beloved wife, mother, Nana, and friend, who entered into eternal rest surrounded by her family.
Born on March 30, 1941, in Hamilton, Georgia, Emily grew up in LaGrange, Georgia, where she formed lifelong friendships and the values that shaped her generous spirit. She later made her home in Columbus, Georgia, where she and her husband, Carter, built a beautiful life together surrounded by family and friends. Emily was a light in the lives of all who knew her—known for her warmth, her laughter, and her unwavering devotion to those she loved. Her door was always open, her table always full, and her heart always ready to love.
Emily is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Carter Marchant, and her loving daughters, Kelly Lewis (married to Charlie Lewis) and Kim Whittle (married to Kevin Whittle). She was the proud and adoring grandmother of Mallory Lewis, Austin Royal (married to Kaitlyn Royal), Victoria Swilling (married to Hunter Swilling), and Alex Royal (engaged to Lila Loudermilk). Her joy continued to grow with the arrival of her cherished great-grandchildren, Beckett Swilling and Vince Royal. She is also survived by her beloved sisters, Claire Raiford and Manelle (Nelle) Sturdivant.
Emily is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Margaret and Clarence Sturdivant, Joe Sturdivant, Jane Bales, and Billy Sturdivant, all of whom she held close in memory and spirit.
Emily’s legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and unconditional love. She found beauty in life’s simplest moments and leaves behind a family that will continue to honor her strength, her compassion, and her grace.
A celebration of Emily’s life will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, October 30, 2025 in the chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory where family and friends will gather to share memories and rejoice in the blessing of having known her. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emily’s memory to Georgia Hospice Care 1921 Whittlesey Road Suite 110, Columbus, Georgia 31904 or the Alzheimer’s Association—two organizations that reflect the care and compassion she so freely gave to others.
