Erna Irma Vasas (née Schmidt), born on July 9, 1927, in Regensburg, Germany, passed away on March 14, 2026. She lived a long and meaningful life, marked by devotion to her family and an enduring commitment to her values.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, April 3, 2026, at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery 64-66 Custer Rd. Columbus, GA 31905. The funeral procession will depart at 9:30 AM from McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Erna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John P. Vasas, Sr., as well as her parents, Andreas Schmidt and Katharina D. Schmidt, and her sister, Justine Sisneros. Their memories remain an integral part of her legacy.
She is survived by a devoted family that carries forward her spirit and the lessons she imparted. Her children include John P. Vasas, Jr.(Joy), Jane Vasas Luckett, Raymond A. Vasas (Teresa), Stephen J. Vasas (Beverly), and Thomas M. Vasas. Erna’s influence extended further into the lives of her grandchildren: Kristie Luckett Pearce (Harvey), Stephanie Luckett Griffin (Shannon), Anita Powell McKenzie (Eddie), Robert Vasas, Christopher J. Vasas, Christin M. Hess (Daniel), J. Tyler Vasas (Katharine), Beth Ann Vasas (Bladimir), Celeste Tran (Richard), Angelina T. Vasas, David Vasas (Kaleigh), and Zachary Vasas (Phoung).
The great-grandchildren who were blessed with her love include Skyler J. Griffin, Sidnee J. Griffin, M. Elizabeth Pearce, H. Norwood Pearce, Seth McKenzie, Rowan M. Hess, Reed A. Hess, along with Marli Jo Maldonado, Jovanni Maldonado.
Erna Irma Vasas’s life journey spanned continents and generations, and her legacy will be cherished by all those who knew her. She will be remembered for her steadfast commitment to her family and the warmth she provided throughout her years. Her memory thrives in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
