Fernando Prieto, affectionately known as Fred, passed away on April 6, 2026, in Columbus, Georgia. Born on November 8, 1948, in El Paso, Texas, Fred lived a life marked by dedication, generosity, and a remarkable spirit that endeared him to all who knew him.
Fred’s proudest accomplishments included a distinguished military career in the United States Army, where he served honorably for over 24 years. Retiring in 1990 as a Master Sergeant, Fred demonstrated unwavering commitment and bravery through two tours during the Vietnam War. His service to his country was a profound source of pride throughout his life.
Beyond his military achievements, Fred was a man of many talents and interests. From an early age, he nurtured a love for photography, capturing moments and memories with an artist’s eye. His passion for traveling took him across the globe, enriching his understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures. Music was also a constant companion; Fred taught himself to play the piano and harmonica, expressing his creativity and joy through sound. Among his favorite indulgences were desserts like carrot cake, cheesecake, and any chocolate creation, reflecting his simple yet heartfelt pleasures.
Fred’s personality was a vibrant tapestry of charm, humor, and honesty. Known for his quirky sense of humor and quick wit, he always had a joke or funny story to share, lightening the hearts of those around him. He was a generous man with a big heart, deeply valuing his family above all else. Those who enjoyed his company found in him a genuinely likable and compassionate friend.

Fred is survived by his devoted wife, Maria Prieto; his daughters Anne Patrick and Frances Chavez; sons-in-law Timothy Patrick and Alex Chavez; granddaughter Marena Prieto-Chavez and her fiancé Arjay Gomez, along with two great grandsons; grandson Oscar Chavez; and his siblings Ida Roque, Yolanda Pino, Elizabeth Acosta, Inez Pineda, Lionel Torres, and their respective spouses and partners, Ruben Pino, Manny Acosta, Johnny Pineda, Norma Torres, Ida Carbajal, Ruben Carbajal and wife Patricia, Leo Carbajal and wife Mi, Angela Casio and husband Ruben, Grace Talamantes and husband Carlos.
The family and friends of Fernando “Fred” Prieto remember him as a man whose heart was as wide as his smile was bright. His memory will forever remain a beacon of kindness, laughter, and patriotic spirit. Fred’s life is a testament to the profound impact one individual can have through courage, generosity, and love.
