Fred Louis “Al” Schettino, 83, of Fortson, Georgia, passed away on April 25, 2026.
He was born on May 28, 1942, in Claremont, New Hampshire, the son of the late Ralph James Schettino and Charlotte (Searle) Burnham.
On April 3, 1962, Al married Barbara J. (Poulsen) Schettino at Prince of Peace Church in Lake Villa, Illinois. Together, they lived in Simi Valley, California, and Atlanta, Georgia, before settling in Lindenhurst, Illinois, in 1975.
Al spent most of his adult life in Lindenhurst, where he and Barbara built their home and raised their family. In later years, he moved to Georgia, to be closer to loved ones.
Prior to his retirement, Al worked as a Vice President at RC Electronics in Salem, Wisconsin. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1960 to 1964.
Al will be remembered for his dedication to his family and his steady and dependable presence in the lives of those who knew him. He took great pride in his family and, throughout his life, loved riding his Harley, spending time in the woods hunting and fishing, coaching baseball for his son Jim, and talking on his CB radio—where he built many lasting friendships. He also enjoyed working on cars and fixing just about anything; he was always the one you could count on to lend a hand, had a deep love for the family’s dogs, and was known for his quick wit and a sarcastic sense of humor.
Survivors include: his children, Karen (Frank) Maritato of Glen Allen, Virginia, and James (Cindy) Schettino of Hamilton, Georgia; his grandchildren, Brittany (Kristian) Cangelosi, Alexis (Ryan) Nash, Emerson, and Liam; his great-grandchildren, Leo and Carson; his sisters; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife, Barbara, he was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Gina.
A private interment will be held at Millburn Cemetery, Old Mill Creek, Illinois according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Clancy’s Dream Border Collie Rescue in honor of Al’s lifelong love of Border Collies, especially Mitch and Mollie. https://www.clancysdream.org/
