Chad was born September 10, 1943 in Columbus, GA son of the late Eurl Smith and Fronnie Hathaway Smith. Shortly after graduating from Jordan Vocational High School, Chad joined the Airforce and served his country for four years. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Columbus, Ga where he began working at C&B Autoparts. For most of his life, Chad worked in the automotive business and shared his extensive knowledge of auto parts to serve the surrounding region. Much like his father, cars were not simply a profession for Chad, but his life’s passion. He would also find and re-sell antique car parts of his own; most notably in the Moultrie Swap Meet which he participated in annually for 40 years. On Saturdays, he could always be found on the golf course with his peers. These interests followed him into his retirement and his collections earned him the title of “The Original Picker” amongst his friends.
Chad was a hardworking man, a cherished father, a loyal friend, and a beloved “Dan-Dan” to his grandchildren. During his time selling autoparts, he established connections that turned into lifelong friendships. His lighthearted spirit and charming nature made creating friendships easy for Chad, and he would not have had it any other way. For Chad, “friends were better than money.” Whether participating in car shows, golf tournaments, or sharing many morning meals at Chick-fil-a, he was always surrounded by those he loved.
Other than his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother Earl Smith.
Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Morgan (Kenneth) of Ambrose, GA; granddaughters, Kendall Highsmith (Spencer) of Broxton, GA, Tiffany Morgan of Phenix City, AL, Allie Morgan of Savannah, GA; greatgrandchildren, Morgan Highsmith and Owen Highsmith.
