LTC (Ret.) Gerald L. Winkler, 80, of Columbus, GA died Friday, May 29, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital. A private family memorial will be held at a later date in Trenton, IL.
LTC Winkler was born in Trenton, IL. He lived there until 1954 when he was drafted into the Army. Having attained the rank of LTC, he retired in 1974. His many decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device for Heroism in ground Combat and 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantry Badge, The Meritorious Service medal, the Army Commendation medal w/OLC and the Vietnamese Armed Forces Honor medal. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He attended the University system of Columbus College and was awarded a BS Degree in 1980.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years Sigrid Charlotte Steuer Winkler; two sons, Michael Lawrence Winkler (Amy) of Columbus, GA and James H. Winkler of Hamilton, GA; twin grandsons, Addison Winkler and Austin Winkler of Athens, GA and one granddaughter, Elise Winkler of Columbus, GA.
