Gregory Garrett Cathey

Gregory Garrett Cathey, known as Garrett, died Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 1, 2025 at The River of Life church, 8060 Us Hwy 27 Hamilton, GA 31811 officiated by Pastor Dan Rogers. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:30 AM at the church according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Garrett, was born on August 23, 1982, in Columbus, Georgia, to Rebecca Ann (Crew) and Gregory Bob Cathey. From childhood, Garrett carried a restless curiosity and a vivid creative spirit. He was a gifted artist who worked with wood, wire, pencil, and metal—bringing to life sculptures, sketches, and handmade jewelry unlike anything else. Garrett found great pleasure in making handmade gifts for everyone he knew and he had a unique gift for restoring old, forgotten things and seeing beauty where others did not.

Garrett loved to stay busy, especially outdoors, where nature fed his imagination. He met life with a silly sense of humor, often turning even serious moments into laughter. Beneath that humor was a deep heart, full of feeling and complexity.

Garrett’s life held light and shadow, humor and hardship. He was an artist, a son, a brother, a friend and a soul who loved in his own way. Though his path was not easy, he remains forever loved.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Ann Crew. He is survived by his father, Greg Cathey, and stepmother, Joyce; his brother, Richard Barfield (Caroline); his sisters, Niki Barfield, Lindsay Cathey (Mike), with whom he shared a special bond, and Wren Dickens (Dan); his brother, Chris Scrivner (Stephanie); and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
