Gregory Lynn Helphinstine was born in Washington Court House, OH, on February 28th, 1952, to his late parents, Virgil Helphinstine and Bernice Littleton. 1st Sergeant Helphinstine provided 24 years of honorable and diligent service to his country, where he served in The United States Army, Corps of Engineers. During his time in service, Gregory spent a third of his military career in foreign service, where he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Two Meritorious Service Medals, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Tow National Defense Service Medals, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars (BSS), The Bronze Order of Defleury Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Five Overseas Service Ribbons (Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Bronze German Air Defense Gun Badge. He is especially recognized for his service during Desert Storm and the Gulf War.

While stationed in Korea, Gregory met the love of his life and future wife of 46 years, Yong-Nam Helphinstine. Gregory and Yong-Nam became married while living in Korea before moving back to the United States in 1980. Gregory and Yong-Nam have four children together: Shad Helphinstine, Heather, Tina and Kimberly.

Since his time in service, Gregory has resided at his home in Columbus, GA with his wife Yong-Nam. Outside of his military prestige, Gregory was best known for his hunting interests and accomplishments. From twelve- pointed bucks to the majestic Jackalope, Gregory had just as many stories as he did trophies.

Gregory was a well-respected member of his community and place of worship, North Highland Church. He was a baptized believer in Christ and held a good respect and fear of God.

After a long fight with Parkinson's Disease, Greg peacefully passed away in his home on Saturday, September 19th, 2026 at the age of 74, surrounded by his family and friends. Gregory Helphinstine is survived by his wife, Yong-Name; son, Shad Helphinstine (Shelly); daughters, Heather Pesti (John), Tina Carroll (Eric) and Kimberly Gaffney (Casey); sister, Karla Lyons; brother, Larry Helphinstine (Kathleen); grandchildren, Cody H., Craig, Michael B., Andrew, Natalie, Shayna, Cody M., and Michael M.
