Harold Eugene Upchurch, Jr., passed away on April 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by hard work, generosity, character and unwavering love for his family.
Harold was truly larger than life — a man whose presence was felt the moment he walked into a room. He was known as one of the most caring and hardworking individuals you could ever meet. A natural mentor and teacher, Harold had a gift for guiding others, sharing his knowledge, and lifting people up. He was deeply respected, widely admired, and had a lasting impact on countless lives throughout his career and beyond.
A true jack of all trades, Harold’s work ethic began early. At just 12 years old, he started bagging groceries. When his shift ended, his work did not — he would spend his evenings cutting and splitting firewood and pulling his lawnmower through the neighborhood, always finding a way to earn an honest dollar.
By 16, the race was on — and Harold never slowed down. Over the years, he built a remarkable and diverse career. He served his community as an EMT and Firefighter, owned and operated Oliver’s Grocery, worked in food and liquor sales and ultimately dedicated the final 30 years of his professional career to the commercial electrical industry, retiring from Metro Power. No matter the role, Harold gave it his all and earned the respect of everyone around him.
More than his accomplishments, Harold will be remembered for the way he loved—fully, fiercely, and without hesitation. He was the cornerstone of his family, a steady hand, and a source of wisdom, strength, and unwavering support.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Allen Upchurch and Harold Upchurch, Sr.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dede Upchurch; his children, Tripp Upchurch (Ginny) and DeAun Kirven (Phillip); four precious grandchildren- Riggs, Ella, Ward and Mills. His siblings, Wesley Upchurch (Missy), Harriett O’Neal (David), and Nancy Garner (Dale). He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
Harold’s life was defined by hard work, integrity, and love—a life that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his lessons, his laughter, and his spirit will live on in the many lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, April 9, 2026 at St. Paul Church of Columbus with Rev. Dr. Shane Green officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Columbus Hospice or the American Lung Association at American Lung Association
