Harvey Lanier Dunaway, Jr. 87, of Columbus, GA passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 2:00 in the Northside Cemetery on Pine Street in Lumpkin, GA with Pastor Dan Smith officiating. McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907 will be conducting the services.
Harvey was born February 8, 1939 in Lumpkin, GA to the late Harvey Lanier Dunaway and Margaret Gallman Dunaway. Harvey enjoyed a career spanning over three decades with the State of Georgia as an educator in Metro Atlanta and administrator with the Department of Rehabilitation Services. Harvey looked forward to working every day at his local business and enjoyed a wonderful partnership with his childhood friend, Mr. Houser Pugh. He pursued and excelled in academics, but his most outstanding ability was practical thinking. This combination served him well throughout his life. He was widely known as an outstanding father to his children, a generous and decent man, as well as a friendly and considerate neighbor. He enjoyed company, conversation, and had a remarkable sense of humor. Throughout his life, Harvey adored his dogs and cats, especially his Siamese cat named “Higgins” which brought special memories to him which cannot be understated.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brothers: David and Danny Dunaway and a sister: Little Margaret Allmon.
Survivors include his daughter: Shannon Dunaway of Auburn, AL, son: Shaun Dunaway (Paola) of Columbus, GA, granddaughter: Aubrey Hamric of Pine Mountain, GA, sister: Patricia Tharp of Leesburg, GA and sister-in-law Sandra Dunaway.
