Obituary for Helen Walters White
Columbus, GA – Helen Walters White, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, dedicated educator, and vibrant spirit, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, in Columbus, GA, at the age of 80. Born on February 3, 1945, Helen lived a life marked by creativity, humor, adventure, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
A true artist at heart, Helen was known for her passion for painting and sculpture, finding joy and expression in every stroke and form. Her sharp wit and adventurous spirit were infectious, making every moment with her memorable. She cherished her travels with her late husband, Kenneth White, and held dear the spirited tradition of tailgating at Auburn Football games, cheering on her beloved Tigers alongside him. Helen also poured her love and humor into hosting "Grandma Camp" with her dear friends Jan Underdown and Linda George, creating cherished memories for her grandchildren.
Helen dedicated her professional life to education, impacting countless young minds throughout her career as a public school teacher. She retired from the Muscogee County, GA school district, leaving a legacy of learning and inspiration. Her commitment to education was built on a strong academic foundation, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Auburn University and a Master's Degree in Education from Valdosta State College.
Beyond her artistic pursuits and career, Helen was a compassionate individual who deeply valued service. With a strong family history rooted in the US Navy, including her father, uncles, and brother, she was a steadfast supporter of "Wounded Warriors" charities, honoring the sacrifices of those who served.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth White; her father, Robert James Walters; and her mother, Helen Katherine (Olsen) Walters.
She is survived by her devoted son, Chris McIlvaine, and his wife Stephanie of Birmingham, AL; her cherished grandchildren, Will McIlvaine and Sam McIlvaine; her loving sister, Diane Lewis of Dallas, TX; and her dear brother, Bob Walters of Loxley, AL. Helen also leaves behind a host of extended family, friends, and former students whose lives she touched.
A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM EST at Grace Church, 7211 Britton Drive, Columbus, GA 31904. The service will be open to the public, with a visitation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grace Church, 7211 Britton Drive, Columbus, GA 31904, in honor of Helen’s memory.
