Jack Slayton "Jackie" Copelan, 74, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday August 14, 2013 at St. Paul United Methodist Church 2101 Wildwood Ave. Columbus, GA 31906 with Dr. P. Shane Green, Dr. Edwin M. "Buddy" Cooper, Jr. and Rev. John Fugh officiating. The following will serve as Active Pallbearers: Ken Crumpler, Burton Hewitt, Dale Hester, Terry Hurley, Mike Lacey, and Speedy Gilstrap. A private family interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery according to McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.
Mr. Copelan was born June 25, 1939 in Columbus, GA son of the late Henry DeLamar Slayton Copelan and Sara Hamer Copelan. He attended Wynnton Elementary School and was a 1957 Graduate of Columbus High School and a 1962 Graduate of the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was employed by the Coca Cola Bottling Company until 1969 and was the owner of Team Sports Supply Inc. from 1969 to 2011.
Mr. Copelan was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was a coach and past President of Peach Little League, one of the founders of the Clubview Youth Football Program, and a member of the Fred Haskins Awards Commision. Jackie loved his family, golf and UGA football.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Miriam Byars"Mimi" Copelan, one daughter, Miriam Copelan Graham (Seth), one son, Stan Copelan (Jill), one brother, George DeLamar Copelan, Sr., aunt, Mrs. George S. Hamer, Sr., grandchildren, William Mathews Pease, Slayton Byars Graham, Elizabeth Belle Copelan, Sharon Joy Graham and Donovan Seth Graham, Jr., and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank their friends and the staff of Columbus Hospice for their kindness that was shown to Jackie during his illness.
