James Melton Mullis, Jr., 71, of Columbus passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at Columbus Hospice. James was born January 9, 1954 in Columbus, son of the late James Melton Mullis, Sr., and Ruth Huff Mullis.
James led an interesting life. He was an adventurer, collector, and storyteller. Growing up in the Wynnton neighborhood, James was very involved with Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout of Troop 6. As an adult, he followed in the footsteps of his father, going into insurance at Aflac before becoming office manager of the Hudgins Insurance Agency. He traveled far and wide for both business and pleasure, visiting Spain, Portugal, and Australia. A collector of unique finds and historical artifacts, he opened more than one secondhand business over the years. Living in Athens he was a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, meeting such big names as Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Tyler Perry, and members of the Jeff Foxworthy group, among others. It was through connections in Athens that his company was contracted to create merchandise for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He was very active and sociable until his declining health necessitated him entering assisted living. His big personality and colorful tales will be remembered by all who knew him.
Survivors include his brother, Edward Mullis, and sister, Cornelia Young (Billy), both of Columbus; nephews Michael Smith of Columbus, Logan Ogletree of Columbus; nieces, Holly Mullis of Columbus, Cheryl Balbach (William) of Columbus, Sarah Widener (Logan) of Lizella, GA, and Katlin Young of Houston, Texas.
