Jane Gheesling Deaton, 83, of Columbus, Georgia, died Thursday, October 15, 2015, at Columbus Hospice at Midtown Medical.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 19, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Wynnbrook Baptist Church, 500 River Knoll Way, Columbus, Georgia 31904, with Dr. Brad Hicks officiating. Interment will follow to Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Boulevard, Columbus, Georgia 31907.
Mrs. Deaton was born on August 16, 1932 in Warren County, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late William Cornelius Gheesling and Esther Parham Gheesling. Mrs. Deaton worked as a teacher and guidance counselor for the Muscogee County School System at Baker and Hardaway high schools. She was a member of GAE, MAE, GREA, MREA, AARP, the Georgia Humanities Council, Doctors Hospital Auxiliary, the Muscogee County Democratic Party, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Prior to her career as an educator, Mrs. Deaton worked as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines and was a Summer Counselor at Ridgecrest.
Mrs. Deaton was an avid newspaper reader who "would read the ink off the page." She was gracious with her time, talent, and help. She loved to be surrounded by young people; it helped to keep her young of heart and spirit. Her hobbies included traveling, crossword puzzles, and politics.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Deaton Redding, Pharm.D (Dickey), of Columbus, Georgia; Mary Alice Baker and family; her sister, Margaret Gheesling Trawick, of Stone Mountain, Georgia; her nephews and niece, Robert Trawick (Sabra) of Cary, North Carolina, Charles Trawick (Susan) of Tucker, Georgia, and Donna O. Kemp (Billy) of Columbus, Georgia; her great nephews, Tom Kemp and Britt Kemp (April), her sister-in-law, Mary Lucile Wiley (Bill); other family; and her four-legged grandchildren, Prissy, Belle, and Mr. Bootzy. Other than her parents, Mrs. Deaton was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Edward "Ed" V. Deaton and her granddog, Maggie.
Flowers will be accepted and those, who so desire, may make memorial contributions to the Mercer University Advancement Office via the Ann Deaton Scholarship Fund, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta, Georgia 30341.
