John Wooster Burgess, 76, died unexpectedly at Morningside Presbyterian Church Monday, December 21, 2015.

Memorial services will be held 3pm Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Morningside Presbyterian Church with Pastor Stephanie Hanson Boaz officiating according to McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, Georgia 31907.

Mr. Burgess was born February 22, 1939 in Bar Harbor, ME, son of the late Freeman L. and Dorothy Wooster Burgess. He was Vice President of Operations for The Gloucester County Times in Woodbury, NJ, retiring in 1993. He then became Parish Administrator of St. John's Episcopal Church in Salem, NJ, as well as spearheading many community volunteer programs. Upon returning to Columbus he became the Office Administrator at Morningside Presbyterian Church, as well as an active member.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Gay L. Whisnant; his daughter, Jennifer Kay Carpenter; his daughter, Theresa Jane Burgess, and his grandson, Joshua Louis Burgess.

Survivors include his son, J. Keith Burgess (Mechelle) of Columbus, GA; daughter, Janice K. Sims (Danny) of Pilesgrove, NJ; brother, Freeman Burgess, Jr. (Janice) of Albany, GA; 8 grandchildren, Justine Martin (Brent) of Waverly Hall, GA; Jonathan Burgess, Jr. (DiAnna) of Columbus, GA; Brandon Irvine (Lauren) of Columbus, GA; Justin Burgess of Columbus, GA; Rachel Sims of Pilesgrove, NJ; Amanda Sims of Pilesgrove, NJ; Justin Irvine of Columbus, GA; Jacob Irvine of Columbus, GA; 4 great-grandchildren, Jeron Martin, Jocelyn Burgess, Colin Burgess, and Conner Irvine.

Flowers will be accepted but those so desiring may make memorial donations to any charity of your choosing as John was a great supporter of many meaningful causes ranging from people to animals to the environment.
