John Milam, Sr- known to many as “Big Johnny” passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, after a brief illness. He was born Oct 22,1946 in McKenzie, Tennessee to Tom and Jean Milam.
Big Johnny was married to the love of his life, Bonnie Milam, for 48 devoted years. Their partnership was one marked by deep love, loyalty, and shared memories that spanned nearly half a century. For more than 50 years, Mr. Milam dedicated his life to the game of golf. As a PGA Golf Professional, he served as a Golf Pro, Teaching Pro, and President of the Golf Authority. Through his instruction and leadership, he mentored countless players, shaped young golfers, and left a lasting mark on the golf community. The game was not just his profession- it was his passion and a calling he carried with pride. When he wasn’t on the course, Big Johnny felt most at home outdoors. He enjoyed quail, dove, and duck hunting. During the summer months, he could often be found casting a net at Mexico Beach in search of mullet. He was a devoted fan of the Florida State Seminoles and rarely missed a chance to cheer them on.He also had a love for speed and competition, enjoying various NASCAR events. Big Johnny cherished the times he raced against his son at several tracks. Those moments- father and son side by side- were among his greatest joys.
Mr. Milam is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Bonnie. He is survived by his son, John Milam (Julie Milam), and his grandson, John Thomas Milam III, who will carry forward his name, his stories, and his legacy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The PGA of America REACH Foundation, supporting programs such as PGA Jr. League, PGA HOPE (serving veterans), and PGA WORKS.
