Mr. Venable was born October 23, 1930 in Columbus, Ga., to William Marvin Venable and Nellie Smith Venable. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he returned to Columbus where he was a lifelong salesman working for companies including Kinnett Dairies, Southern Foods and the Stanback Company. He always had a smile on his face and one to spare in case anyone in the room needed one. In addition to all his wonderful human qualities, he made the best peanut brittle in the universe which he used liberally as currency around town to get special treatment at local companies who sold him goods and services.
Mr. Venable was a true servant leader and derived a lifetime of pleasure from serving others including the American Cancer Society, Brown Bag of Columbus, and serving as the principal song leader at Rose Hill Church of Christ. He loved watching Atlanta Braves baseball and Georgia Tech basketball and football, and in his younger years he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and boating. His gentle spirit was legend among all who knew him or interacted with him.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Joe and Paul Venable and Betty Scott. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ann Watson Venable of Columbus, Ga., children, Mike Venable (Jill Tigner) of Seale, Ala., Eric Venable of Destin, Fla., and grandchildren Michael Venable (Janice) of East Point, Ga.; Adam Venable of Sandy Springs, Ga., Christopher Riddle of Columbus, Ga., Nicholas Riddle of Columbus, Ga., Laine Venable of Augusta, Ga. and Melissa Venable of Atlanta, Ga., and siblings Ruth Martin of Bainbridge, Ga. and Marvin "Bob" Venable of Alpharetta, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to be made to Columbus Hospice House, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909 or Brown Bag of Columbus, P. O. Box 4828, Columbus, GA 31914.
