June Bernier, born Ruby June Cobb, passed away on October 7, 2026, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. She was born on June 9, 1937, in Dickey, Georgia, to George Lee and Elvie Mote Cobb. June’s life was full of warmth, compassion, creativity, and devoted care for the people she loved.
June trained as a nurse’s aide through Phoebe Putney Hospital and later worked at Doctor’s Hospital in Columbus, where she cared for others with the same kindness she shared with her loved ones. Her artistic and creative nature led her in another direction when she taught herself floral design through a course ordered from an advertisement in the back of a magazine. That path opened the door to many years of meaningful work, and she went on to serve at Betty Bass Florist for more than 20 years.
She was a woman of many talents, gifts, and hobbies. June enjoyed sewing, sketching, and painting, and she found special joy in gardening - tending to her vegetables and flowers. She also loved fishing and going on sightseeing adventures around Georgia. June loved creating in the kitchen as well - known most for her famous cornbread dressing, yeast rolls, and caramel cakes. She was always supportive of her family and was a kindhearted caregiver to her husband, Hank, in his later life.
Those who knew June will remember her as very loving, friendly, and selfless. She had a way of making others feel welcome, well-fed, and cared for, and her presence brought comfort to everyone around her.
She is survived by her daughter, Sonya Massey; her grandchildren, Lee Plowden, Alex Merritt (Kevin), Catherine White (Mark); her niece, Victoria Harrell (Adam); and her best friend, Linda Timmons. She also leaves behind her adored great grandchildren, including Ezra, Willow, Rowen, and Eli Merritt, who lovingly called her “June June”. All who knew her will carry forward the memories of caring support she gave so freely.
June was preceded in death by her husband, Henry “Hank” Simon Bernier; her son, Charles Plowden, Jr.; her sister, Ann Robbins; her niece, Gaye McGriff; and her son-in-law, Billy Massey.
Services will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026, at McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, Georgia 31907. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the funeral following at 2:00 p.m. A graveside prayer will take place at Parkhill Cemetery after the service for those who would like to join.
The family would like to give special thanks to all of her medical care team and for the staff at St. Francis Hospital who so professionally and compassionately cared for her.
June Bernier’s life was one of quiet talent, faithful work, and enduring love. She will be deeply missed.
