June Evelyn Morrow was born on August 18, 1938, in Elba, Alabama, to the late D.J. Morrow and the late Essie Taylor Morrow. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jerry Chadwick and Charles Whitehurst Sr., the father of her children: Wendy, Chuck, and Donna. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Edwards, Martha Bryant, Ann Williams, and Lee Hawkins, and her brother, John D. Morrow.
June graduated from Baker High School in 1956. Prior to retirement, she was employed by Raymond Rowe Furniture, Rhodes Furniture, Sterchi’s Furniture, and Montgomery Ward Furniture, serving as a Salesperson, Sales Manager, and Furniture Design Consultant. She earned numerous awards in recognition of her outstanding service and achievement.
June will be lovingly remembered for her deep love for God and for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and for her passion for sharing her faith with others. She liked to journal, write songs, and authored a book, each expressing her deeply rooted Christian values. Her first church home was Mt. Moriah Primitive Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia, where she was baptized in the lake across the street. She later attended Rocky Mount Baptist and White Rock Free Will Baptist while residing on Lake Harding, Alabama. After moving from Lake Harding, she joined Epworth Methodist Church in Phenix City, Alabama.
June prayed faithfully every morning and would journal her daily prayers and her spiritual journey. She thanked God for His many blessings, for His love, for His grace, for His guidance, for His Word and for the peace He gives His believers when they know they will spend eternity with Him. She prayed that God would put people in her path that she could minister to. She would ask that she recognize people that she could share God’s love with, someone that doesn’t know Him, someone that has gone astray, someone that is hurting, someone that is lonely. “Father, let my heart be a mirror of your love, not self seeking, but seeking my Father’s will.”
June lived at Lake Harding after retirement where being in the beauty of nature inspired her spiritual writing. She loved to entertain family and friends. Her home on Lake Harding was the heart of countless cherished memories for her grandchildren. Summers were filled with the sounds of laughter as she taught us to fish with bamboo poles and rod-and-reels, helping us bait our hooks with worms or crickets and comforting us with the gentle reminder that “worms don’t have brains.” Days were spent digging for worms, swimming in and jet skiing across the water, and walking to the old railroad trestle, while nights brought children’s magic shows and musical performances on the back deck for an audience of family and friends.
She filled our childhoods with wonder: melting cheese in coffee to add to buttered Ritz crackers, listening to singalongs on tape, making S’mores on the electric stove, and the culinary delight of “ladybug soup.” Her lake cabin home welcomed generations of cousins and siblings year after year. Fireworks danced in the lake’s reflection each Fourth of July, and Christmas lights twinkled across the water every winter.
She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Travis of Columbus, Georgia, and her family: Amanda “Mandy” Maholick (Mark) and their children, Madeline Maholick and Matthew Maholick; Alexandria “Alex” Travis; and Bradley Travis (Victoria) and their children, Delaney Travis and Ezekiel Travis. She is also survived by her son, Chuck Whitehurst (Cynthia) and his family: Che’, Jacob, and Jyoti and her three children; and her daughter, Donna Marsh (Randy) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and their daughter, Shelby Marsh. Additional survivors include her brother, Darrell Morrow; her sister, Frankie Pollock; and sons-in-law, Mike Franklin and Steve Travis.
June loved helping others and she loved everyone and everyone loved her. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmama and friend.
