Lioba (Lee) Elisabeth Laurence, 79, of Columbus, GA died Saturday, April 16, 2011 at her home.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, April 22, 2011 at Ft. Benning Main Post Cemetery with Reverend Eddie Layfield officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held at the New Apostolic Church located at 5831 Billings Road in Columbus. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mrs. Laurence was born October 27, 1931 in Mannheim-Sandhofen, Germany. She was the daughter of the late Hermann and Margarethe Burger (nee Brendel). Mrs. Laurence was known as a fashionable dresser, animal lover, and for her quick wit and hijinks. She started her career in Columbus with the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain and worked there for 15 years. She then worked at the Speakeasy restaurant in Columbus for 21 years before retiring.

Other than her parents, Mrs. Laurence is preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald F. Laurence and her daughter, Monica Laurence.


Survivors include her devoted husband, Jerry Y. Sauls of Columbus; daughters, Ramona (David) Rodriguez and Renee Kortbawi all of Columbus, and Raneth (A.J.) Randolph of Bossier City, LA; step-sons, Erwin (Brenda) Sauls and Johnny (Angie) Sauls of Abbeville, AL, and Randy (Jody) Sauls of Benson, MN; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Marcus and Mary Rodriguez of Columbus, Bradley (Jhovana) Kortbawi of Portsmouth, VA and Brenna (T.J.) Kortbawi-Vrtiska of Columbus, Ralaya (Ken) Allen of Las Vegas, NV and Alise Randolph of Bossier City, LA; three step-grandchildren, Shane (Tiffany) Sauls of Lexington, OK, Amanda Sauls of Benson, MN, and Christopher Sauls of Abbeville, AL; four great-grandchildren, Adriana and Ayana Allen, Brennan Kortbawi, and Brynnleigh Vrtiska; and one step-great-grandchild, Nicholas Sauls.

The family extends gratitude to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living of Columbus for the loving and professional care they provided her in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, or to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
